The Mindful Meal - Hara Hachi Bu
October 13, 2026
Over the past few weeks in our MediterrAsian Approach to Longevity, we’ve built an incredible foundation. We’ve looked at healthy fats, expanded our view of fermented foods, and tapped into the healing power of spices and teas.
Today, we are shifting our focus from what we put on our plates to how we actually eat it.
In our fast-paced modern lives, meals are often eaten on the go, standing up, or while scrolling through emails. But both Mediterranean and traditional Asian cultures view mealtime as a sacred, intentional rhythm—and modern science is proving that how we eat matters just as much as what we eat.
The Wisdom of Hara Hachi Bu
In Okinawa, Japan—one of the world's most famous Blue Zones for longevity—people practice a centuries-old Confucian proverb before every meal: Hara Hachi Bu.
It translates simply to: Eat until you are 80% full.
It takes about 20 minutes for your gut to signal to your brain that it has had enough nourishment. When we rush through meals or eat while distracted, we bypass that natural satiety cue, easily overeating before our bodies can register it. Stopping at 80% full gives your digestive system breathing room, prevents sluggishness, and keeps your blood sugar stable without a massive post-meal spike.
Rest, Digest, and the Nervous System
Remember our NESS pillars - Nutrition-Exercise-Stress-Sleep? Stress and digestion are intimately connected.
- If you are eating while stressed, anxious, or rushing ("fight or flight" mode), your body diverts blood away from your digestive tract and toward your muscles.
- Enzymes drop, gut motility slows down, and even the cleanest, healthiest meal can lead to bloating, fatigue, and poor nutrient absorption.
When we slow down, chew our food thoroughly, and breathe, we activate our parasympathetic nervous system—the "rest and digest" state. This simple act unlocks maximum nutrient extraction and supports optimal metabolic signaling.
The "Step-by-Step" Way
You don’t have to meditate for an hour before dinner to practice mindful eating. Try introducing these simple micro-habits this week:
- The 5-Minute Pause: Before your first bite, take three deep breaths to signal safety to your nervous system. Put your fork down between bites, and really taste your food.
- The 80% Check-In: Halfway through your meal, pause and ask yourself: Am I actually still hungry, or am I just eating out of habit or speed?
