Wellness Wednesday: Sweat, Shift and Sustain — Hydration for Exercise

By Lisa Wise

July 29, 2026

Over the last two weeks, we’ve uncovered why waiting until you're thirsty is a trap, and why water alone often needs a mineral partner (electrolytes) to truly hydrate your cells.

Now, let’s take that knowledge and put it into motion—literally.

Whether you're lifting weights, going for a power walk, or taking a high-intensity fitness class, your hydration strategy can make or break your performance and your recovery.

The Pre-, During and Post-Workout Blueprint

When you exercise, your body doesn't just lose water; it burns through energy reserves and electrolyte stores at an accelerated rate. To keep your metabolic engine running smoothly, you need a timeline:

  1. **Before You Move (The Priming Phase):**Don't chug a massive bottle of water right as you walk out the door (that's a quick ticket to a sloshing stomach!). Instead, sip about 12 to 16 ounces of electrolyte-infused water 30 to 60 minutes before your workout. This ensures your cells are plump, primed, and ready to contract efficiently.
  2. **During Your Sweat (The Sustaining Phase):**If your workout is under 45 minutes of moderate movement, plain water is usually fine. But if you’re pushing past the 45-minute mark, sweating heavily, or doing intense interval training, sip on water with a light electrolyte blend. This prevents performance drops, muscle fatigue, and that sudden brain fog mid-set.
  3. **After You Finish (The Recovery Phase):**Post-workout hydration isn't just about replacing what you lost; it’s about signaling your body to start repairing muscle tissue and lowering cortisol. Rehydrate with minerals, and pair your fluids with a balanced protein and carbohydrate snack to support your metabolic recovery.

The "Step-by-Step" Action

Stop guessing your way through your workouts.

  • Check your energy: Do you feel wiped out halfway through your routine? That’s your cue to look at your pre-workout hydration.
  • Check your recovery: Are you dealing with stubborn muscle soreness or fatigue the next day? That’s your cue to upgrade your post-workout mineral replenishment.
  • Need a Personalized Roadmap? Movement and hydration are vital pieces of your metabolic puzzle.
